Karim Janat’s IPL story is one of the shortest in the league’s history: one match, one over, 30 runs conceded, and no comeback. The Afghan all-rounder, signed by Gujarat Titans for INR 75 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction, debuted against Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur on 28 April 2025 and ran straight into a rampant Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who took him for 30 in a single over. Janat did not bat, did not play another IPL game, and was released by the Titans ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
That harsh introduction sits oddly beside his wider record. For Afghanistan, Janat has played 75 T20 internationals with 759 runs and 42 wickets, and his 5 for 11 against the West Indies in 2019 remains one of his country’s finest T20 spells. In domestic T20 cricket he has more than 2,900 runs and two centuries. The IPL numbers tell none of that. With IPL 2027 not yet underway and no team confirmed, his next move decides whether his IPL career gets a second chapter or stays a one-over footnote.

Who Is Karim Janat?
Karim Janat, born 11 August 1998 in Kabul, is an Afghan all-rounder and the younger brother of former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan. A right-hand batter and right-arm medium pacer, he made his international debut for Afghanistan against the UAE in December 2016 and won the Player of the Match award in that very game, scoring 25 runs and taking 3 for 31. It was an early sign of a cricketer built for the shortest format.
Across his international career Janat has played 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 75 T20Is for Afghanistan, scoring 759 runs and taking 42 wickets in T20Is. His career-best 5 for 11 against the West Indies at Lucknow in 2019 stands out as one of Afghanistan’s great T20 bowling performances. He has been a regular in franchise leagues around the world, including the BPL, LPL and PSL, and his T20 record of nearly 2,938 runs at a strike rate above 137, with two centuries, shows a hitter who can change a game down the order.

His one appearance came late in the 2025 season, and GT released him on 15 November 2025 as part of a squad clear-out that also saw Gerald Coetzee, Dasun Shanaka, Mahipal Lomror and Kulwant Khejroliya let go.

Karim Janat’s IPL Performance Analysis
One over is not a sample; it is a snapshot, and a cruel one. Janat’s IPL economy of 30.00 tells you everything about a single evening in Jaipur and nothing about the bowler. His T20I record of 42 wickets and his domestic T20 economy in the high sevens describe a very different, far more dependable cricketer than the one Suryavanshi dismantled. The release was easy to understand: a foreign all-rounder who played once and went for 30 is a luxury no squad carries. But the underlying profile, a bowling all-rounder who bowls right-arm medium at around 140 kph and hits cleanly down the order, is exactly the kind of package mini auctions routinely rediscover. His 2027 prospects hinge on whether any franchise values the 180-plus T20s of experience over the one bad over.
