His early years were quiet. Russell played only seven matches across 2012 and 2013 for Delhi and two matches in his first KKR season in 2014, scoring 60 runs in total. Everything changed in 2015, when he scored 326 runs at a strike rate of 192.90 and won his first MVP award. For another all rounder story told the same way, see Hardik Pandya’s runs year by year.
What This Record Tells Us
The 2019 season is the peak of Russell’s batting life. 510 runs at a strike rate of 204.82, with 52 sixes, is one of the great power hitting seasons in IPL history, and it earned him his second MVP award. It was also the only time he crossed 500 runs in a season, and it places him among the players with the most 400 run seasons talked about each year, even though he never won the Orange Cap. You can see how rare such seasons are in our Orange Cap winners list.
What stands out across the full table is the strike rate, not the volume. Russell batted mostly at number six and seven, so 2651 career runs is a strong return for a finisher. His 223 sixes had him seventh on the all time six hitters list when he retired. Even in his last season in 2025, when the runs dropped to 167, he still struck at 163.73, proof that the power never fully left him.
Russell and his long time KKR teammate Sunil Narine defined an era for the franchise. Read Sunil Narine wickets year by year to see the bowling side of that partnership.
