Vijay Shankar’s IPL stats belong to a player whose career took in four franchises, a World Cup, an IPL title and one of the most talked-about selections in Indian cricket. Across 12 seasons he played 78 IPL matches, scored 1,233 runs and took 9 wickets, moving from Chennai Super Kings to Sunrisers Hyderabad to Delhi Capitals to Gujarat Titans and finally back to Chennai. He retires from the league as a 2022 champion with the Titans and as the man whose “three-dimensional” abilities once carried him to England for the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Shankar played his last IPL season for CSK in 2025, where he struck his career-best 69 not out against Delhi Capitals. Released after that campaign, he went without a team in 2026 and announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the IPL on 22 May 2026. He will therefore have no IPL 2027 team, and his final numbers are locked in.

Who Is Vijay Shankar?
Vijay Shankar is a former Indian all-rounder born on 26 January 1991 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. A right-hand middle-order batter and right-arm medium-pace bowler, he was a late bloomer who forced his way into the national side after standout domestic seasons for Tamil Nadu, including a 2014-15 Ranji Trophy knockout run of 111, 82, 91 and 103.
He played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India between 2018 and 2019 and was part of India’s 2019 ODI World Cup squad, where he became the first Indian to take a wicket with the first ball of a World Cup debut. In the IPL he was the classic utility player — signed four times over, trusted in the middle order, and rarely a frontline bowling option despite his all-rounder tag. He played his final IPL season for Chennai Super Kings in 2025, sharing the dressing room with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, and retired from Indian domestic cricket and the IPL in May 2026 to pursue opportunities in overseas leagues.

Shankar’s franchise journey followed the market’s verdict on him. Delhi paid ₹3.2 crore for his promise in 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad kept him for three straight seasons around a pre-2019 trade, and Gujarat Titans bought him cheap in 2022 and watched him win them a title before his most productive season came in 2023. His 2025 return to Chennai, alongside Ravichandran Ashwin and Rahul Tripathi in CSK’s refreshed squad, closed the circle — and his IPL career — at the franchise where it began. His Gujarat years also brought him together with Nishant Sindhu in the Titans setup.

His per-season best figures for 2018, 2019 and 2020 are not officially confirmed from reliable sources.

Vijay Shankar’s IPL Performance Analysis
Shankar’s IPL numbers split neatly into two halves: promise and utility. The promise showed early — 101 runs at 50.50 in his first real season with Hyderabad in 2017, then 212 runs at 53.00 and a strike rate of 143.24 for Delhi in 2018. That 2018 season, built on his reputation as a genuine two-skill player, earned him the ₹3.2 crore tag and a place in India’s World Cup plans. The utility phase that followed was steadier but thinner: three seasons at Sunrisers brought 399 runs at a combined average in the low twenties, a hamstring injury cut his 2020 short, and his bowling — 8 of his 9 career IPL wickets came between 2018 and 2021 — quietly vanished from his role.
Gujarat Titans rebuilt him as a specialist middle-order batter. The 2023 season was his peak: 301 runs at a strike rate of 160.11, three fifties, and a regular place as the Titans chased another final. The drop-off was sharp — 83 runs in 2024, release, and a final CSK season in 2025 that gave him his career-best 69* but only six matches. Like fellow Indian seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, Shankar found that medium pace alone rarely buys overs in the IPL; his career survived on his batting, and when the runs dried up, so did the contracts. His retirement in May 2026 closed a 12-season arc that delivered a title, a World Cup cap and 1,233 runs — respectable returns for a player who was rarely anyone’s first pick.
