Who Is Allah Ghazanfar?
Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar is a right-arm off-spin bowler from Afghanistan who plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Born on 20 March 2006 in Paktia Province, he is one of the youngest international spinners in world cricket and stands 6 ft 2 in tall, which gives him extra bounce off the surface.
Ghazanfar actually began his career as a fast bowler before switching to off-spin during the Covid lockdown, developing a carrom ball that made him a genuine mystery spinner. He announced himself at the 2024 Under-19 World Cup with eight wickets, then broke into Afghanistan’s senior ODI side on 7 March 2024 against Ireland at just 17.
His international breakthrough came in November 2024, when he took 6/26 against Bangladesh in Sharjah — the second-best ODI bowling figures in Afghanistan’s history — and became the fifth-youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul in ODI cricket. He made his only Test appearance so far on 26 December 2024 against Zimbabwe.

|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Kolkata Knight Riders | Replacement signing (did not play) | 0 |

| 2026 | Mumbai Indians | Retained | 11 |

Ghazanfar’s IPL story started as an injury replacement: Kolkata Knight Riders brought him in for the injured Mujeeb Ur Rahman in 2024, but he never got a game. The twist is that Mujeeb Ur Rahman is the teammate whose shoes he nearly filled, and then, in an irony of timing, MI signed Mujeeb as Ghazanfar’s own replacement a year later. Mumbai’s interest goes back to their 2024 pre-season camp, where coach Mark Boucher invited him as a net bowler. After MI paid ₹4.80 crore for him at the 2025 mega auction, they kept faith through his long injury layoff and retained him for 2026.
Allah Ghazanfar IPL 2024 Stats
Allah Ghazanfar did not play any matches in IPL 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders signed him as a replacement for the injured Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but he remained on the bench for the entire season, which KKR eventually won. His IPL statistics for 2024 read zero matches and zero wickets, which is why the season does not tell us anything about his ability.
Allah Ghazanfar IPL 2025 Stats
Allah Ghazanfar did not play any matches in IPL 2025. Mumbai Indians had bought him for ₹4.80 crore at the mega auction in Jeddah, beating out bidding from KKR and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and he was expected to pair with Mitchell Santner as MI’s spin duo. But a fracture in the L4 vertebra, picked up on Afghanistan’s tour of Zimbabwe, ruled him out of the Champions Trophy and the whole IPL season. Mumbai signed Mujeeb Ur Rahman for ₹2 crore as his replacement.
Allah Ghazanfar IPL 2026 Stats

IPL 2026 was Ghazanfar’s actual debut season, and he played all eleven of his matches for Mumbai Indians. Fifteen wickets made him MI’s leading wicket-taker of the season, a fine return for a 20-year-old bowling alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya‘s pace attack. The economy rate of 10.02 was expensive, which is the honest caveat on an otherwise promising season — he attacked, took wickets, and went for runs doing it.
His standout contribution came with the new ball. He picked up six powerplay wickets across the season, the most by any Mumbai Indians spinner in a single IPL campaign, breaking Harbhajan Singh’s record of five from 2011. One of those came against Lucknow Super Giants, when his carrom ball deceived Josh Inglis and Suryakumar Yadav completed the catch running back.
Allah Ghazanfar IPL 2027 Stats
IPL 2027 statistics are not available yet because the season has not started. Ghazanfar’s 2027 team and price are not officially confirmed. There has been media speculation about trade interest in him, but nothing has been confirmed by any franchise or the IPL, so it should be treated as unconfirmed until an official announcement.
Allah Ghazanfar IPL 2027 Team and Price
His IPL 2027 team and price are not officially confirmed. He was last retained by Mumbai Indians for the 2026 season at ₹4.80 crore, the same price they paid at the 2025 mega auction. Whether MI retain him again or he enters the auction pool will only be known once the official retention lists and auction details are announced.

Allah Ghazanfar IPL Highest Score

He has 15 IPL wickets from 11 matches, all taken in the 2026 season, with best figures of 2/17. Two of those wickets came in a single match against Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede, where he dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube in a spell of 4-0-25-2. Allah Ghazanfar’s IPL Performance Analysis
What stands out from Ghazanfar’s first real IPL season is the trust MI placed in him. A 20-year-old off-spinner getting the new ball in the powerplay, in a side containing Jasprit Bumrah, tells you the plan: attack early with the carrom ball and take wickets rather than contain. It worked — his powerplay strike rate was the best part of his season and earned him an MI franchise record.
The flip side is the economy rate. Going at 10.02 an over is high, and he was expensive in matches where batters lined him up, like the 45 runs conceded in three overs against Rajasthan Royals. That is the normal trade-off for a young mystery spinner: batters either cannot pick him or smash him. For now the wickets column justifies the method, and his age means there is obvious room to learn control while keeping the threat.
His durability is now the subplot. The back fracture that wiped out 2025 cost him a full development year, but MI’s decision to retain him at the same price shows they still believe. Whether he stays in blue for 2027 is the question hanging over him, with unconfirmed trade speculation in the media. If MI keep him, expect him to remain their designated powerplay spinner alongside Deepak Chahar‘s swing and Bumrah’s pace.
