Fastest to 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 Runs in IPL

The fastest to 1000 runs in IPL is Shaun Marsh, who reached the mark in only 21 innings in 2011. That early burst set the tone for a record book that keeps changing as new stars arrive and older stars keep scoring. Every 1000 run step after that first mark tells a different story about speed, staying power and timing.

This article lists the fastest batter to every major IPL run milestone, from 1000 runs to 7000 runs. It gives the innings count for each record, the year it was set, and the batter who came closest behind the leader. The numbers cover the IPL from 2008 to 2026, so the list includes the newest record set in 2026.

The count used here is innings batted, not matches played. A batter can sit out a match or stay unbeaten in the dugout, so innings give the fairest measure of how quickly the runs were scored.

Fastest to 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 Runs in IPL Overview

Seven batters hold the seven speed records, but only five names appear on the list. Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, David Warner and Virat Kohli each own at least one milestone, while Shaun Marsh and Sai Sudharsan own the first two. No batter owns the whole set, which shows how hard it is to stay fastest at every stage of a long career.

Record History

Shaun Marsh made the fastest start of all. He won the Orange Cap in the first IPL season in 2008 with 616 runs in 11 matches for Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings. He carried that form into later seasons and reached 1000 runs in his 21st innings on 2 May 2011. Lendl Simmons reached the same mark in 23 innings for Mumbai Indians in 2017, but no one has beaten Marsh in the years since.

Chris Gayle owned the middle milestones for a long time. He reached 2000 runs in 48 innings on 16 April 2013 and 3000 runs in 75 innings on 6 May 2015. His power hitting made those marks look safe, and he finished his IPL career with 4965 runs in 142 matches. That 2000 run record finally fell in 2026, when Sai Sudharsan reached the mark in 47 innings for Gujarat Titans against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 24 April 2026, one innings faster than Gayle.

KL Rahul then took over the next two milestones. He reached 3000 runs in 80 innings in 2021, second only to Gayle, and then passed Gayle at 4000 runs. Rahul reached 4000 runs in 105 innings on 15 April 2023, scoring 74 from 56 balls for Lucknow Super Giants against Punjab Kings. Gayle had needed 112 innings, David Warner 114 and Virat Kohli 128. Two years later Rahul broke another Warner record, reaching 5000 runs in 130 innings on 22 April 2025 with an unbeaten 57 for Delhi Capitals against Lucknow Super Giants. Warner had needed 135 innings and Kohli 157.

Warner still owns the 6000 run record. He reached it in 165 innings on 8 April 2023 for Delhi Capitals against Rajasthan Royals. Kohli had set the previous mark at 188 innings in 2021, when he became the first batter to reach 6000 IPL runs. Only four batters have reached 6000 runs in total: Warner, Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan in 199 innings and Rohit Sharma in 227 innings.

Kohli stands alone at the top of the final milestone. He became the first batter to reach 7000 IPL runs on 6 May 2023, in his 225th innings, scoring 55 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Delhi Capitals at Delhi. Rohit Sharma became only the second batter to reach 7000 runs, in his 266th innings on 30 May 2025, scoring 81 for Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator at Mullanpur.

What This Record Tells Us

The early milestones reward a fast start. Marsh, Gayle and Sudharsan all scored heavily from their first seasons, and their records show what happens when a batter finds form at once and keeps it. The later milestones reward staying fit, staying picked and scoring season after season. That is why the names change as the totals grow: a hot start is not enough to stay fastest to 5000 or 6000 runs.

For the wider run charts, readers can also look at the most runs by overseas batters in IPL and the IPL 2027 retention deadline, rules and purse guide. Rahul is the clearest example of a batter who grew into the later records. He was not the fastest to 1000 or 2000 runs, but he was second fastest to 3000 and then fastest to both 4000 and 5000. Warner shows the same pattern in reverse at the top end: he was fastest to 5000 for five years and still fastest to 6000, yet Kohli passed him in total runs and reached 7000 first. Speed at one milestone does not guarantee speed at the next, and that is what makes this combined list worth tracking after every season.
