IPL Stats: Most Wickets Against Each Team

Who has taken the most wickets against each IPL team in history? Some bowlers simply own certain opponents. Sunil Narine has dismissed Punjab Kings batters 36 times in the IPL, which is the most wickets any bowler has taken against a single team in league history. Lasith Malinga did the same job for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings with 31 wickets, and Yuzvendra Chahal tops two different lists, against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. This page lists the bowler with the most wickets against each of the ten current IPL teams, with verified counts and the stories behind the numbers.

Every figure below has been checked against multiple published record tables and 2025 season scorecards. Two of the ten lists end in ties, and the newest teams naturally have the smallest records because they have played fewer seasons.

IPL Stats: Most Wickets Against Each Team Overview

The headline record is Sunil Narine’s 36 wickets against Punjab Kings for Kolkata Knight Riders. He moved past Umesh Yadav’s long standing mark of 35 during the 2025 season. At the other end of the scale, Kagiso Rabada leads the list against Gujarat Titans with just 9 wickets, which simply shows how young that franchise is.

Record History

Lasith Malinga built the oldest of these records. Playing for Mumbai Indians from 2009 to 2019, he took 31 wickets in 21 matches against Chennai Super Kings, with best figures of 5 for 32. Sunil Narine is the closest challenger on that list with 26 wickets, followed by Harbhajan Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal on 24 each. Malinga also led the charts against two now defunct teams, Deccan Chargers with 19 wickets and Pune Warriors with 12.

Sunil Narine’s mark against Punjab Kings became the biggest record in this category in April 2025. He took a four wicket haul against them on 15 April 2025 to reach 36 wickets, moving past Umesh Yadav’s 35. The return game on 26 April 2025 was abandoned after just one over, so the number stood at 36. Yuzvendra Chahal is third on the Punjab list with 32 wickets.

Yuzvendra Chahal set his Kolkata record the same week, taking four wickets against KKR on 15 April 2025 to reach 33. That put him one ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 32. Chahal also owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad list outright with 29 wickets, including memorable four wicket hauls of 4 for 17 and 4 for 29 in 2022 and 2023. Andre Russell is next against SRH with 25.

Jasprit Bumrah broke a three way tie against Delhi Capitals with 3 for 12 on 21 May 2025, reaching 30 wickets and moving clear of Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla, who both sit on 27. Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sandeep Sharma moved to 30 wickets in the 2026 season, going one past Bumrah’s 29. Bumrah’s 5 for 21 at Wankhede in 2024 remains the only five wicket haul against RCB.

The Mumbai Indians list is shared by two bowlers. Dwayne Bravo took 33 wickets against MI for Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Lions, while Mohit Sharma matched him with 33 for four different teams. Mohit did not add to his count in 2025, going wicketless in his one game against Mumbai that season, so the tie stands.

Amit Mishra’s 31 wickets against Rajasthan Royals is the longest running of these records. The leg spinner spread them across 21 innings for Delhi Daredevils, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. His 31 was already confirmed in April 2025 reporting and no challenger has come close since.

The two youngest lists belong to the newest franchises. Trent Boult leads against Lucknow Super Giants with 12 wickets in 7 matches, with Arshdeep Singh next on 10. Kagiso Rabada tops the Gujarat Titans list with 9 wickets in 5 innings for Punjab Kings. Both records are certain to grow as these teams play more seasons.

What This Record Tells Us

The first thing these numbers show is that long careers matter more than single great seasons. Every leader on this list played at least five seasons against the team in question, and most of them faced their favourite opponent across several different jerseys. Yuzvendra Chahal took his 33 wickets against KKR while playing for three different teams, which is why a bowler can hold two of these records at once.

Matchups matter too. Spinners dominate the lists against spin friendly opponents: Narine and Chahal both feast on lineups that struggle against quality spin, while the great quicks like Malinga and Bumrah made their marks with death bowling against strong batting sides like CSK and DC. The ties are also worth noting. When two bowlers share a record at 33 each, as Bravo and Mohit Sharma do against MI, it usually means the record is ripe for someone to break it outright. It is no surprise that many of the names on these lists also appear among the Purple Cap winners over the years. Anyone who wants to check the numbers can find the official season by season bowling records on the IPL website.
