Chennai Super Kings sit clear at the top with four Purple Cap wins, the only team to win it more than twice. Record History

The Purple Cap story began in 2008 with Sohail Tanvir of Rajasthan Royals, whose 22 wickets set the first mark. Deccan Chargers then became the first team to produce back to back winners, with RP Singh in 2009 and Pragyan Ojha in 2010.

Chennai Super Kings took over the record in the middle years. Dwayne Bravo won it in 2013 with 32 wickets, the joint highest tally by any Purple Cap winner. Mohit Sharma followed in 2014 and Bravo won it again in 2015, giving CSK three wins in three seasons. Imran Tahir added a fourth in 2019, and no team has caught up since.

Sunrisers Hyderabad struck twice in a row through Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 2016 and 2017, the only bowler to win it in consecutive seasons for the same team. Gujarat Titans are the newest force, with Mohammed Shami winning in 2023 and Prasidh Krishna in 2025, which moved them level with five other teams on two wins.

What This Record Tells Us

CSK sitting alone on four wins says a lot about how they build bowling attacks. They won with three very different bowlers: an all rounder in Bravo, a new ball seamer in Mohit Sharma, and a leg spinner in Imran Tahir. That shows a system that finds a way to take wickets every year rather than relying on one star.

The chasing pack is crowded. Six teams sit on two wins each, and each pair tells its own story. SRH won theirs with one bowler twice, while Gujarat Titans did it in their first four seasons as a franchise. Delhi and Punjab count wins from their old names, which shows how long those franchises have had strong bowling without winning the league often.

Two teams stand out for the wrong reason. Kolkata Knight Riders have played every season since 2008 without a single Purple Cap winner, and Lucknow Super Giants are still waiting too. For a record built on taking wickets, that is a gap both teams will want to fix.
