Dushmantha Chameera’s IPL story is one of brief flashes of real pace rather than long spells. The Sri Lankan quick first entered the IPL in 2018 when Rajasthan Royals bought him at auction, only to miss the season with a back injury before he could bowl a ball. His actual debut came four years later with Lucknow Super Giants in 2022, and it was there he produced the best run of his IPL career: nine wickets in twelve matches, with an economy of 8.73 that he has not matched since. Since then he has worn the colours of Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, and he was part of the KKR squad that won the title in 2024.
Across five seasons and five franchises on paper, Chameera has played only twenty IPL matches and taken thirteen wickets at a career economy of 9.70. That record tells its own story: teams keep picking him for his 140 kph pace and wicket-taking ability in other leagues, but in the IPL he has remained a fringe player, picked for a handful of games and dropped again. Dushmantha Chameera IPL stats show a bowler who has never quite converted his international reputation into an IPL career.

Who Is Dushmantha Chameera?
Dushmantha Chameera is a Sri Lankan fast bowler born on 11 January 1992 in Ragama, Sri Lanka. A right-arm quick who regularly touches 140 kph, he rose through the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo, taking 32 first-class wickets in the 2013-14 domestic season to earn a Sri Lanka Test squad call-up late in 2014. He went on to debut in all three international formats in 2015 and was part of Sri Lanka’s 2015 ICC World Cup squad, where his three wickets against Scotland stood out.
Injuries have shaped his career as much as his pace. Knee and back problems kept him in and out of the Sri Lankan side for years, and the same pattern followed him into franchise cricket. He bowls with a slingy, round-arm action and is most dangerous when he swings the new ball, but accuracy and fitness have never quite allowed him to hold down a regular spot in the IPL.

The 2018 chapter ended before it began. Rajasthan Royals signed Chameera for his base price of INR 50 lakh, but a back problem picked up in Sri Lankan domestic cricket ruled him out of the first three weeks and he never joined the squad in time to play. Three years later he got another IPL door ajar when RCB added him for the UAE leg of IPL 2021 as Daniel Sams’ replacement, but he was named in the squad without getting a game. His real IPL career started at the 2022 mega auction, where Lucknow Super Giants paid INR 2 crore for him and gave him twelve matches in his debut season.

Chameera went unsold at the 2024 mini auction, but his IPL luck changed when Kolkata Knight Riders signed him as an injury replacement for Gus Atkinson at his reserve price of INR 50 lakh. He played a single match, conceding 48 runs in three wicketless overs. It was his only appearance in the tournament that year, though it came with a consolation prize: KKR went on to win the IPL 2024 title, making him a member of a championship squad.

At the IPL 2025 mega auction, Delhi Capitals bought Chameera for INR 75 lakh. He played six matches in a Delhi attack that already featured Anrich Nortje, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar. Four wickets at an average of 42.75 and an economy of 11.40 showed the same problem that had followed him since 2022: pace, but too many runs. His best outing was a disciplined 1/24. With the bat he made 10 runs, with a highest of 8 not out.

Dushmantha Chameera’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers draw a clear arc. In 2022, Lucknow gave Chameera a real run of twelve matches and he responded with nine wickets at 8.73 an over, including his best figures of 2/17. Every season since has been thinner: one match and no wickets for KKR in 2024, six matches and four expensive wickets for Delhi in 2025, and a single outing in 2026. His career economy of 9.70 sits well above what franchises tolerate from overseas quicks, and that single metric explains why he keeps drifting between the XI and the bench.
Delhi’s 2025 attack is instructive. Alongside Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Mitchell Starc, Chameera was the interchangeable overseas seamer, called on when conditions or rotation demanded it and dropped when they didn’t. KL Rahul‘s Delhi side used him as a stopgap rather than a plan. For IPL 2027, his path back into regular contention would run through the same door he has used twice before: a replacement signing if a first-choice quick breaks down. Otherwise, his IPL career reads as a cautionary tale about raw pace without control.
