Record History

Kohli made his IPL debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2008 as a teenager. The early years were quiet. Against the now defunct Deccan Chargers he managed 306 runs in 10 innings, with his best of 71 coming in 2011. The numbers grew as he moved up the order and took the captaincy in 2013.

The 2016 season changed everything. Kohli scored 973 runs, still the most by any batter in a single IPL season, with four hundreds. Two came against Gujarat Lions, 100 not out and 109, plus 108 not out against Rising Pune Supergiant and 113 against Kings XI Punjab. Those knocks built the base of his tallies against Punjab and the two defunct sides. For years Kohli shared the dressing room with Chris Gayle in some of the league’s most destructive batting pairs; Chris Gayle’s team wise IPL record is covered separately in our library.

More hundreds followed against the big teams. He scored 100 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019, 100 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, 101 not out against Gujarat Titans in 2023, 113 not out against Rajasthan Royals in 2024, and 102 not out against Punjab Kings in 2025. His 99 against Delhi Capitals remains one short of a hundred, a knock that sits just outside the highest individual IPL scores against Delhi Capitals.

The 2026 season brought the biggest milestone. On 5 April 2026, against Chennai Super Kings at Chinnaswamy, Kohli passed Rohit Sharma’s 1161 to take the record for most runs against a single IPL team, finishing that game on 1174. He also became the first player to score 1000 plus runs against three different teams. He ended the season with 675 runs at a strike rate of 165.85, the fastest of his career, and hit 75 not out in the final against Gujarat Titans on 31 May as Royal Challengers Bengaluru won two titles in a row. Our IPL 2026 season report card covers that campaign in full.

Kohli remains the IPL’s all time leading run scorer, and he won the Orange Cap in 2016 and 2024. See the full list of Orange Cap winners in IPL for the complete roll of honour.

What This Record Tells Us

The spread is the story. Kohli has crossed 1100 runs against four different teams, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, and no other batter owns even three such tallies. His best average among the heavily faced sides is 48.83 against Delhi Capitals in 32 innings, which shows this is not just volume. Among current batters, KL Rahul’s opposition wise numbers are the nearest modern comparison for consistency across teams.

The strike rates reveal where he has felt most free. Gujarat Titans have gone at 156.63 across 10 innings, his fastest against any side, while Rajasthan Royals have held him to 125.57, his slowest anywhere. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the two best drilled bowling units of the IPL era, kept him to 128.30 and 128.74.

There is one clear gap. Despite 10 fifties against Chennai Super Kings and 7 against Mumbai Indians, Kohli has never scored an IPL hundred against either side. His highest scores against them are 90 not out and 92 not out. Against every other major team he has at least one hundred. That missing hundred against his two biggest tallies is the one record still waiting.

Finally, the loyalty factor matters. Every one of the 9336 runs came for Royal Challengers Bengaluru across 19 seasons from 2008 to 2026. Few modern batters have matched this spread, and Sanju Samson’s record against each IPL team shows a very different shape, with one clear favourite hunting ground. No other batter in league history has built a record like this for a single club.
