Jasprit Bumrah IPL Wickets Record History
The early years were slow. Bumrah played only 2 matches in 2013, 11 in 2014 and 4 in 2015. He took 3, 5 and 3 wickets in those seasons. The talent was clear from his debut, but regular chances came later.
The rise started in 2016, when he took 15 wickets in 14 matches. From 2016 to 2022, he took 15 or more wickets in every season he played. He took 20 wickets in the title winning 2017 season, 17 in 2018 and 19 in 2019. His bowling stayed tight in that period, with an economy rate under 7.50 in each of those seasons except 2016.
The peak came in 2020. Bumrah took 27 wickets in 15 matches, at an average of 14.96, and took two four wicket hauls. He followed that with 21 wickets in 2021 and 15 in 2022. His 5 for 10 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022 remains his best IPL bowling figure.
After missing the whole 2023 season with a back injury, Bumrah returned in strong form in 2024. He took 20 wickets in 13 matches, at an average of 16.80 and an economy rate of 6.48, and took 5 for 21 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In 2025 he took 18 wickets in 12 matches and passed Malinga to become Mumbai Indians leading IPL wicket taker. During 2025 he also became the first bowler to take at least 15 wickets in nine different IPL seasons.
The 2026 season was very different. Bumrah took only 4 wickets in 13 matches, at an average of 102.50. That was his lowest tally in a full season, and it stands out sharply against the nine seasons in which he reached 15 wickets or more. Readers can compare this pattern with other fast bowlers in the Bhuvneshwar Kumar wickets year by year record and the Harshal Patel wickets year by year record.
What This Record Tells Us
Three things stand out from the numbers. First, Bumrah was steady for a long time. Nine seasons with 15 or more wickets is a mark of a bowler teams could plan around year after year, not a bowler who had one good season and faded.
Second, his economy rate stayed low even when wickets were harder to get. In most of his best seasons his economy rate was under 7.00, which shows control as well as wicket taking. The 2020 season combined both strengths, with 27 wickets at an economy rate of 6.73.
Third, the 2026 dip shows how quickly a record can change. One low season does not erase nine strong seasons, but it does lower his career average and economy rate from the marks he held at the end of 2025.
