Sherfane Rutherford’s IPL career has never followed a straight line, but every time a franchise has needed a left-handed hitter who can change the tempo of an innings in the space of an over, his phone has rung. The Guyana-born West Indies batter made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals in 2019 and, across spells with five different franchises, has built a career record of 520 runs from 31 IPL matches at a strike rate of 142.86. This Sherfane Rutherford IPL stats page covers his teams, prices, season-by-season numbers and his current status ahead of IPL 2027.
For six seasons Rutherford was the classic IPL impact player: picked for his six-hitting, used sparingly, and never quite given a long run. That changed at the IPL 2025 mega auction, when Gujarat Titans signed him for Rs 2.6 crore and gave him 13 matches. He responded with 291 runs at a strike rate of 157.30, his best season by a distance, and earned a trade back to Mumbai Indians, where he scored his maiden IPL fifty, an unbeaten 71 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in 2026.

Who Is Sherfane Rutherford?
Sherfane Rutherford was born on 15 August 1998 in Guyana and is a left-handed batter who also bowls right-arm fast-medium. He is a white-ball specialist whose T20 reputation was built in the Caribbean Premier League and franchise leagues around the world, where his ability to hit sixes from the middle and lower order made him a sought-after finisher.
For the West Indies he has played more than 50 T20 Internationals and over 20 ODIs, scoring a century in ODI cricket. His most famous international innings came against Australia in Perth, where he shared a 139-run sixth-wicket stand with Andre Russell, the highest partnership for that wicket in T20 International history. In the IPL, though, he spent years as a fringe player before his 2025 breakthrough with Gujarat Titans finally gave him an extended run of games.

Rutherford’s team changes tell the story of a player franchises keep returning to. He debuted with Delhi Capitals in 2019, then moved to Mumbai Indians in a pre-2020 trade that sent Mayank Markande to Delhi, though he did not get a game in that star-studded MI season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru gave him three matches in 2022, and Kolkata Knight Riders kept him in their squad for 2024 without picking him. The turning point was the IPL 2025 mega auction, where Gujarat Titans paid Rs 2.6 crore for him and used him as a regular middle-order batter. After that season, MI traded him back at the same price, and he spent IPL 2026 with them alongside fellow new arrival Shardul Thakur, who was traded in from Lucknow Super Giants on the same day.
Sherfane Rutherford IPL 2024 Stats
Rutherford did not play any IPL matches in 2024. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad that season but was not selected for a single game, so there are no 2024 batting or bowling numbers to record.

IPL 2025 was Rutherford’s breakthrough season in the league. Playing for Gujarat Titans under Shubman Gill, he batted in the middle order behind stars like Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, and delivered 291 runs in 13 matches with the kind of strike rate, 157.30, that franchises want from a finisher. His average of 32.33 was comfortably his best across any IPL season, and GT leaned on him for quick late-innings runs. GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel later confirmed Rutherford was a major part of their middle order that year. The season was good enough for Mumbai Indians to trade him back at his existing fee of Rs 2.6 crore, even though GT decided Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips better suited their future middle-order plans.

Back at Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026, Rutherford’s opportunities were again limited to 8 matches in a batting line-up packed with Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. His returns were patchy, 123 runs at 24.60, but he produced the single best innings of his IPL career: an unbeaten 71 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, his first fifty in the league. A strike rate of 164.00 across the season underlined what MI bought him for, even if the runs did not come consistently enough to hold down a regular spot alongside the established finishers.

Rutherford’s highest IPL score is 71 not out, made for Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026. It is his only IPL fifty and the standout innings of his league career, arriving in his eighth season. Sherfane Rutherford IPL Wickets and Best Bowling
Rutherford has taken just one wicket in the IPL. His best bowling figures are 1/6, recorded for Delhi Capitals against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019, the only season in which he bowled in the league. Sherfane Rutherford’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers split Rutherford’s IPL career cleanly into two phases. From 2019 to 2022 he played 10 matches across Delhi and Bengaluru, scoring 106 runs at a strike rate in the 120s, and spent two more seasons (2020, 2024) carrying drinks. Franchises clearly believed in the raw material, his six-hitting in the CPL and other leagues, but the IPL’s overseas-slot squeeze kept pushing him out.
IPL 2025 with Gujarat changed the arithmetic. Given 13 matches, he produced 291 runs at 157.30, and the strike rate is the figure that matters: 157.30 is elite finisher territory, well above his career mark of 142.86. His 2026 return, 123 runs in 8 games for MI, looks thin by comparison, but it included his only IPL fifty and his strike rate actually rose to 164.00. The pattern is consistent with a player who does his job in short bursts rather than accumulating runs. With only one wicket in 31 games, his value is purely batting, so his IPL 2027 prospects hinge on whether MI still see him as their overseas finisher.
