Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL story began in the most dramatic way a young bowler could ask for. Picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 when he was barely twenty, he finished the season with an IPL winner’s medal and the Emerging Player of the Tournament award — the first overseas cricketer ever to win it. Seventeen wickets at 6.90 an over announced a left-arm seamer whose cutters were almost unreadable on Indian pitches. A decade later, with 65 wickets from 60 IPL matches and a career-best 4/29 on his Chennai Super Kings debut, the Fizz’s IPL journey remains one of the more unusual ones in the league: five franchises, a ₹9.20 crore auction bid from Kolkata Knight Riders, and then a season where he never got to play a ball for them.
Unlike most modern IPL pacers, Mustafizur’s value was never about express pace. His slower balls and off-cutters made him a death-overs specialist, and his 2016 economy rate of 6.90 still ranks among the best ever for a full season in the league. Below is his complete IPL statistical record, his auction history, and where he stands ahead of IPL 2027.

Who Is Mustafizur Rahman?
Born on 6 September 1995 in Satkhira, Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman came up through the Bangladesh Under-19 system and made his international debut in 2015. Within a year he was one of world cricket’s most talked-about young quicks, thanks to a bag of slower balls and cutters that troubled even the best white-ball batters. He made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, won the title in his first season, and was named Emerging Player of the Tournament — the first overseas player to receive that honour. He has since played for five IPL franchises: Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings.

The defining pattern of Mustafizur’s IPL career is his movement between franchises. After that famous 2016 title with Sunrisers Hyderabad and a quiet 2017, he spent one season each with Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, then two stints at Delhi Capitals bookending a strong 2024 campaign with Chennai Super Kings — where he shared the new ball with Deepak Chahar and Matheesha Pathirana in a side captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad and featuring MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja. His most recent franchise was Kolkata Knight Riders, who bought him for ₹9.20 crore — the highest price ever paid for a Bangladesh player — but he was released from the squad before IPL 2026 on the BCCI’s instruction and did not play a match that season.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 33.8 | 14 | 4/29 | 22.71 | 9.41 |
This was Mustafizur’s best IPL season in years. Bought by Chennai Super Kings for ₹2 crore, he opened the season with a stunning 4/29 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai — his career-best IPL figures, dismissing Faf du Plessis, Rajat Patidar, Virat Kohli and Cameron Green on his CSK debut. He briefly held the Purple Cap race lead and finished with 14 wickets in nine matches before leaving the camp early for national duty with Bangladesh.
Mustafizur Rahman IPL 2025 Stats

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 11.0 | 4 | 21.75 | 7.91 |
Mustafizur went unsold at the 2025 mega auction despite a ₹2 crore base price, but he returned to the league mid-season when Delhi Capitals signed him as a replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk for ₹6 crore — making him the most expensive Bangladesh player in IPL history at the time. He played three matches and took four wickets with an economy rate of 7.91, a tidy return for a bowler arriving cold into the tournament’s final stretch. Because he joined as a replacement, he was not eligible for retention by Delhi Capitals for the following season under the IPL’s replacement-player rules.

Mustafizur did not play in IPL 2026. At the mini-auction in December 2025, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings drove a bidding war that ended with Kolkata Knight Riders signing him for ₹9.20 crore from a ₹2 crore base price — a bid that showed how much value mini-auction franchises still place on an experienced left-arm death bowler. Weeks later, KKR released him from the squad on the BCCI’s instruction ahead of the season, so his 2026 IPL record reads zero matches and zero wickets.

Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers tell a story of one brilliant peak and several solid but unspectacular seasons. The 2016 campaign remains the outlier: 17 wickets, 6.90 economy, and a level of control at the death that made his cutters famous overnight. What followed was a slow drift — a near-lost 2017, one average season with Mumbai Indians in 2018, and two seasons (2019 and 2020) entirely out of the league. His 2021 and 2022 returns were workmanlike: 14 wickets for Rajasthan Royals and 8 for Delhi Capitals, economies hovering in the 7.6–8.5 range, the profile of a reliable squad bowler rather than a marquee name.
The 2024 season with Chennai Super Kings was the late revival — 14 wickets in nine matches, a Purple Cap lead in the early weeks, and that 4/29 on debut in yellow. His economy that season (9.41) was the worst of his career, but the wicket-taking was real, done alongside Deepak Chahar and Matheesha Pathirana in a strong CSK attack. Whether he adds to the 65-wicket tally in IPL 2027 depends entirely on the auction; at 31, his cutters still travel well, but he is now effectively a free agent after the lost 2026 season.
