Abid Mushtaq IPL stats make for an unusual reading in this series: the Jammu and Kashmir left-arm spinner was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 20 lakh at the IPL 2024 auction, yet he is still waiting for his first appearance in the tournament. That waiting game is not unusual for uncapped Indian spinners at a franchise that already had Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal running its spin department, but it leaves Abid Mushtaq with an IPL record of zero matches, zero runs and zero wickets after one full season on the books.
The story behind the numbers is worth knowing. Born in Bhaderwah in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, Abid climbed from age-group cricket into the J&K senior side in 2019, was spotted by then J&K mentor Irfan Pathan, and bowled his way into national attention with a stunning 8 for 18 against Vidarbha in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy. Rajasthan Royals bought him at his base price in Dubai in December 2023. Released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction and unauctioned in 2026, he now faces the IPL 2027 auction with his debut still pending.

Who Is Abid Mushtaq?
Abid Mushtaq is a left-arm orthodox spinner and left-handed lower-order batter from Bhaderwah, a town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district roughly 150 kilometres from Jammu. He represented J&K at the U-16, U-19, U-22 and U-23 levels before former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, then a mentor with J&K, pushed for his inclusion in the senior side in 2018.
He made his List A debut on 27 September 2019, his T20 debut on 11 November 2019 and his first-class debut on 9 December 2019, all for Jammu and Kashmir. The defining spell of his domestic career came in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, when his second-innings 8 for 18 against Vidarbha denied the opposition a win and made him J&K’s leading wicket-taker for the season with 32 scalps. That form earned him a call-up as a net bowler for Australia’s tour of India ahead of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Domestically he is a genuine bowling all-rounder: in T20 cricket he has taken 39 wickets at an economy of 6.52 with best figures of 4 for 2, and he strikes the ball hard enough down the order to be rated a decent lower-order hitter in auction scouting reports.

|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Rajasthan Royals | Bought at auction (INR 20 lakh); no appearances |

Abid Mushtaq has only ever been on the books of one IPL franchise. Rajasthan Royals bought him at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai at his base price of INR 20 lakh, and the franchise’s own website ran a feature on his journey from net bowling to the Royals squad. He spent the whole 2024 season in the squad without getting a game, with Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Keshav Maharaj ahead of him in the spin queue. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Royals released him along with a long list of names including Jos Buttler, Trent Boult and Shimron Hetmyer, and no franchise picked him up at the mega auction. He went unauctioned again in 2026.

Abid Mushtaq IPL Records and Achievements
Abid Mushtaq has no IPL records or achievements yet, since he is still waiting for his debut. His achievements so far are all in domestic cricket: he was Jammu and Kashmir’s leading wicket-taker in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy with 32 wickets, his 8 for 18 against Vidarbha was one of the spells of that season, and he served as a net bowler for the Australian team before the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Those domestic credentials are what earned him an IPL contract in the first place.
Abid Mushtaq’s IPL Performance Analysis
There is no IPL performance to analyse yet, which is itself the story. Abid Mushtaq’s domestic record suggests a bowler worth a look: an economy of 6.52 across 42 domestic T20 matches shows he can hold an end in the shortest format, and left-arm orthodox spin is a commodity every IPL squad wants in its ranks. The reason he never got a game at the Royals is straightforward — when Sanju Samson could call on Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, a 20-lakh uncapped spinner was always going to be a development pick rather than a first-XI option.
The trend since is less encouraging: released before the 2025 mega auction, unsold at that auction and unauctioned in 2026. At 29, his window for an IPL debut depends on a franchise deciding his domestic body of work outweighs the competition from younger spinners in the 2027 auction pool. If he gets a contract, his realistic role is a middle-overs container who can also hit a few at the death with the bat.
