On 30 April 2021, at a near-empty Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Harpreet Brar produced a spell that is still replayed in IPL highlight reels. Coming on against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the little-known Punjab Kings left-arm spinner dismissed Virat Kohli for his first-ever IPL wicket, then removed Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers in the same passage of play, finishing with 3 for 19. To cap the evening he struck an unbeaten 25 off 17 balls. That one night rewrote his career: he went from a fringe domestic spinner who had almost moved to Canada for work to a cult hero in the Punjab dressing room. The Harpreet Brar IPL stats since then show a player who has built a steady, one-franchise career on control, drift and the ability to strike in the middle overs.
Brar is one of the few modern IPL cricketers to have represented a single franchise from his debut to the present day. Punjab Kings bought him for his base price of INR 20 lakh in 2019, paid INR 3.8 crore for him in 2022, released him before the 2025 mega auction and then bought him back for INR 1.5 crore. Across 51 IPL matches he has taken 37 wickets and scored 249 runs, numbers that understate his value as a containing spinner and a lower-order hitter who has won Punjab close games with the bat.

Who Is Harpreet Brar?
Harpreet Brar was born on 16 September 1995 in Moga, Punjab. A left-arm orthodox spinner who bats left-handed in the lower order, he plays domestic cricket for Punjab and has never represented another IPL franchise. His domestic credentials were built early: he led Punjab U23 to the CK Nayudu Trophy title in 2018-19 and helped Punjab win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2023, taking 15 wickets in 10 matches in that campaign.
His route to the IPL was far from smooth. After repeated trials with the Punjab franchise he was close to leaving for Canada when a late call-up brought him into the 2019 squad. He made his IPL debut that season against the Delhi Capitals, playing only two games. Away from cricket, Brar is also a singer: in May 2025 he released the Punjabi single “Alpha” during the IPL season, and he has performed tracks such as “Viah Di Treek” and “Jatt Jammeya”.

Loyalty defines his IPL journey. From 2019 onward the Punjab franchise has kept faith with him through every squad cycle: two retentions at his base price, a INR 3.8 crore purchase at the 2022 auction, and a buy-back at INR 1.5 crore at the 2025 mega auction after Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians pushed the bidding. He was retained again for the 2026 season at INR 1.5 crore. Across those years he has shared the dressing room with Punjab stalwarts like Arshdeep Singh, Shashank Singh, Prabhsimran Singh and Marcus Stoinis, and he played under Shikhar Dhawan‘s captaincy before Shreyas Iyer took charge in 2025.

Harpreet Brar IPL 2027 Team and Price
Harpreet Brar’s IPL 2027 team and price are not officially confirmed. His last confirmed status is a retention by Punjab Kings for the 2026 season at INR 1.5 crore. Whether Punjab retain him again or he goes back into the auction pool depends on the official retention announcements ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, whose date and venue will be announced in due course. Given his one-franchise history since 2019, Punjab remaining his team would continue one of the IPL’s longest unbroken player-franchise associations.

Harpreet Brar’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers trace a clear arc. Brar’s breakthrough 2021 season was built on control: 5 wickets at an economy of 6.04, the only season in which his economy dipped below 7. The INR 3.8 crore price tag in 2022 brought a bigger role but leaner returns, with his economy climbing to 9.13, the worst of his career, across just 5 matches.
From 2023 he settled into the squad regular the franchise had hoped for, taking 16 wickets across the 2023 and 2024 seasons while keeping his economy around 8. Then 2025 flipped the pattern: fewer overs (22) but his best strike bowling yet, 10 wickets at 19.00 apiece, even as the economy ticked up to 8.64. His batting has moved in the opposite direction, peaking in 2024 with 75 runs at a strike rate of 138.89.
The 2026 season, two matches only, suggests the pecking order has shifted as Punjab rebuilt their spin attack. At 31, Brar’s left-arm orthodox remains a middle-overs containment option with genuine wicket-taking bursts, but his game time now depends on match-ups and team balance rather than a guaranteed slot.
