Kamindu Mendis IPL Stats tell a short but unusual story. The Sri Lankan all-rounder has played only five IPL matches, all for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2025, scoring 92 runs and taking 2 wickets. Yet in that brief spell he did something no IPL player had ever done: bowl with both arms in a single over. That one over, plus a stunning boundary catch that won the Catch of the Season award, made his debut campaign one of the most talked-about introductions in recent IPL history.
Mendis arrived at SRH as a base-price signing at the 2025 auction, picked up for ₹75 lakh. A left-hand batter who bowls both right-arm off-spin and slow left-arm orthodox, he gives captains a rare tactical weapon: the ability to switch bowling arms within an over to create match-ups. Sunrisers Hyderabad clearly valued that uniqueness enough to retain him for IPL 2026, even though he did not get a game that season.
His IPL 2027 status remains open. With retention lists yet to be announced, it is not officially confirmed whether SRH will keep him or whether he will return to the mini-auction. This page covers his verified IPL numbers season by season, his auction price history, his records, and what we know about his 2027 team and price.

Who Is Kamindu Mendis?
Kamindu Mendis was born on 30 September 1998 in Galle, Sri Lanka. He is a left-handed batter and an all-rounder who bowls with both arms, a skill only a handful of cricketers in the world possess. He made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka in October 2018 against England, his ODI debut in March 2019 against South Africa, and has been a regular across formats since.
It is in Test cricket that Mendis has built his biggest reputation. In March 2024 he scored twin centuries in a single Test against Bangladesh, 102 and 164, and he became the fastest Asian batter to 1000 Test runs, reaching the mark in just 13 innings. He was also the first player ever to score fifty or more in each of his first eight Test matches. That record of reliability with the bat is what made his low-key entry into the IPL so interesting: here was a proven international performer joining as a ₹75 lakh base-price signing.
Kamindu Mendis IPL Teams
| Season | Team | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | — | Did not play in the IPL |
| 2025 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Bought at auction for ₹75 lakh |
| 2026 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Retained for ₹75 lakh; did not play a match |
| 2027 | — | Not officially confirmed |
Mendis entered the IPL only in 2025, when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him at his base price in the mega auction. SRH kept him for the 2026 season on the same ₹75 lakh deal, a clear sign they saw long-term value in his dual-arm bowling even without immediate returns. He did not feature in a single 2026 match, which puts genuine question marks over his place in the squad for 2027, where media speculation has already listed him among the players SRH could consider releasing.
Kamindu Mendis IPL 2024 Stats
Mendis was not part of the Indian Premier League in 2024. He had not yet been picked up by any franchise, and his IPL career began a year later with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2025. There are no IPL 2024 batting or bowling figures to report.
Kamindu Mendis IPL 2025 Stats
His debut season produced the full body of his IPL career so far. Across five matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mendis scored 92 runs at an average of 30.67 and a strike rate of 133.33, with a highest score of 32 not out. With the ball he bowled seven overs, took 2 wickets, and finished with best figures of 1/4 and an economy of 8.57.

He made his IPL debut on 3 April 2025 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, scoring 27 runs and taking a wicket in the same match. It was in that game that he bowled three deliveries of left-arm spin and three of off-spin in a single over, dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi, an IPL first. Later in the season he produced the Catch of the Season, a full-stretch diving take at the boundary to dismiss Dewald Brevis against Chennai Super Kings.
Kamindu Mendis IPL 2026 Stats
Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Mendis for IPL 2026 at his 2025 purchase price of ₹75 lakh, but he did not appear in a single match during the season. With no innings batted and no overs bowled, there are no IPL 2026 statistics to report. The season added nothing to his career totals, which still stand at the five matches from 2025.
Kamindu Mendis IPL 2027 Stats
IPL 2027 statistics are not available yet because the season has not started. Mendis has 92 runs and 2 wickets from his five IPL matches, all from the 2025 season. Whether he adds to those numbers in 2027 depends on the retention and auction decisions that are still to come.
Kamindu Mendis IPL 2027 Team and Price
Not officially confirmed. Sunrisers Hyderabad had not announced their retention decisions at the time of writing, so it is not yet known whether Mendis will stay with SRH for a third season or re-enter the player pool. He was bought for ₹75 lakh at the 2025 auction and retained at the same price for 2026. Some pre-season reports have speculated that SRH could release him to free up an overseas slot, but that is unconfirmed speculation, not an official decision. Under the IPL 2027 retention rules, retained players continue at their previous auction price, so if SRH keep him, his price would remain ₹75 lakh.

Kamindu Mendis IPL Highest Score
Kamindu Mendis’s highest IPL score is 32 not out, made during the 2025 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. With only five IPL innings to his name, his batting record is still a small sample: his other notable knock was the 27 he scored on debut against Kolkata Knight Riders on 3 April 2025. A batter who has scored twin Test centuries against Bangladesh clearly has the technique for bigger scores, but the IPL has not yet given him the chances to show it.
Kamindu Mendis IPL Wickets and Best Bowling
Mendis has taken 2 wickets in his IPL career, both in the 2025 season, with best bowling figures of 1/4 from his seven overs. His headline bowling moment came on debut against Kolkata Knight Riders, when he became the first player in IPL history to switch his bowling arm in the middle of an over, sending down three balls of left-arm orthodox spin and three of right-arm off-spin, and dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the process. For SRH, his bowling has always been about the match-up option rather than volume: alongside frontline quicks like Pat Cummins, he offers a captain a spin lever that works against both right- and left-handers.
Kamindu Mendis IPL Batting Records
Mendis holds no major IPL batting records after five matches, which is no surprise given his limited opportunities. His Test-match records are the real headline of his career: fastest Asian to 1000 Test runs, twin centuries in one Test against Bangladesh, and fifties in each of his first eight Tests. In the IPL, his place in history is different: he is the first player to bowl with both arms in a single IPL over, a record that is unlikely to be matched often.
Kamindu Mendis IPL Auction Price History
| Season | Team | Price | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | ₹75 lakh | Auction (mega auction, base price) |
| 2026 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | ₹75 lakh | Retained |
| 2027 | — | Not officially confirmed | — |
Mendis registered for the IPL 2025 mega auction at a base price of ₹75 lakh and was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at that price, with no bidding war. SRH then retained him for 2026 at the same ₹75 lakh figure. His 2027 price will depend on whether he is retained again or goes back under the hammer, which will be decided by the retention lists.

Kamindu Mendis’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers are thin, so the analysis has to be honest about that. Five matches, 92 runs at a strike rate of 133.33, and two wickets at an economy of 8.57: this is the record of a fringe player, not a regular. But the context matters. SRH bought him as a tactical luxury, a player whose ambidextrous bowling lets a captain manufacture match-ups without using a substitution, and his batting at number six or seven gave them a left-hand option with genuine Test-class technique.
The concern for his IPL future is straightforward. A full season in 2026 without a single appearance, in a squad stacked with overseas stars like Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma at the top and Heinrich Klaasen behind the stumps, left him down the pecking order. Franchises rarely carry expensive overseas bench players for two years running, which is why the 2027 retention call will define whether his IPL story gets a second chapter or ends at five matches.
If he does stay in the league, the path to games is through his bowling flexibility. Few teams have a spinner who can attack both edges of the bat in the same over, and middle-order teams hunting for balance, like the sides built around all-rounders such as Nitish Kumar Reddy or power-hitters like Ishan Kishan, could find that skill worth an overseas slot.
