Record History
Kohli waited eight seasons for his first IPL century. He made his IPL debut in 2008, and he scored plenty of fifties in those early years, but the first hundred came only on 24 April 2016, against Gujarat Lions in Rajkot. Even that hundred ended in defeat, as Gujarat Lions chased 181 and won by 6 wickets with three balls left. Kohli still took the player of the match award.
What followed in the next month was the greatest batting run the IPL has seen. Kohli scored 108 not out against Rising Pune Supergiants on 7 May 2016, 109 against Gujarat Lions on 14 May 2016, and 113 against Kings XI Punjab on 18 May 2016. Four centuries in one season remains a record he shares with Jos Buttler, who matched it in 2022. Kohli finished 2016 with 973 runs, still the highest total by any player in a single IPL season, and he led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the final.
After 2016, the centuries became rare. His fifth hundred came in 2019, a 58 ball 100 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Then came three seasons without a century, from 2020 to 2022, before two hundreds in the space of four days in May 2023. The first, 100 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, kept Bengaluru in the playoff race. The second, 101 not out against Gujarat Titans, was not enough, as Gujarat Titans won the match and Bengaluru missed the playoffs.
His eighth century, 113 not out against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on 6 April 2024, was the first century of that season and took him past 7,500 IPL runs, a first for any player. Rajasthan Royals still won the match by 6 wickets, helped by a century from Jos Buttler. Kohli scored no century in 2025, the season in which Bengaluru finally won their first IPL title. His ninth century then arrived in 2026, an unbeaten 105 in a chase of 193 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur, after two ducks in his previous two matches.
Season by Season
| Season | Centuries | Scores |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 4 | 100 not out, 108 not out, 109, 113 |
| 2019 | 1 | 100 |
| 2023 | 2 | 100, 101 not out |
| 2024 | 1 | 113 not out |
| 2025 | 0 | No century |
| 2026 | 1 | 105 not out |
All other seasons from 2008 to 2026 produced no Virat Kohli IPL century. The full career total is therefore 9.
Centuries Against Each Opponent

What This Record Tells Us
The first thing the list shows is how hard a T20 century is. Kohli has played more IPL matches than any other player, yet he has only nine hundreds. That is still two clear of Jos Buttler on seven, and three clear of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul on six each. A century in this format needs a batter to bat long, score fast, and survive the pressure of the death overs, all at once.
The second point is the spread. Five of the nine centuries came while Kohli was captain of Bengaluru, in 2016 and 2019. The later hundreds, in 2023, 2024 and 2026, came after he gave up the captaincy, which shows the record is not tied to one role in the team. Six of the nine centuries came in wins and three in defeats, including two of his best knocks, the first hundred in Rajkot and the 113 not out in Jaipur.
The third point is timing. The 2026 hundred matters because it came after a poor run of form and in a chase with the top spot on the table at stake. It also stretched a record that already looked safe.
