Matthew Wade’s IPL career is a study in contrasts. The Matthew Wade IPL stats tell the story of a T20 World Cup hero for Australia whose league numbers never matched his international reputation: 183 runs from 15 matches, spread across 13 years and two franchises. His best IPL season came in 2022, when the Gujarat Titans bought him for Rs 2.40 crore at the mega auction and he kept wicket during their title-winning debut campaign, scoring 157 runs in 10 matches.
Wade made his IPL debut back in 2011 with the Delhi Daredevils and then waited more than a decade for his next chance. A brief return in 2024 yielded only two matches, and he has since moved into coaching, joining the Titans as an assistant coach for IPL 2025. With the 2027 season yet to begin, his playing future in the league remains unconfirmed.

Who Is Matthew Wade?
Matthew Scott Wade is a former Australian wicketkeeper-batter from Hobart, Tasmania. A left-hander who opened for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League and finished games for Australia in T20 internationals, Wade built his reputation as a tough competitor in pressure situations. He announced his retirement from international cricket in October 2024 after 13 years and 225 appearances across formats for Australia.
His most famous innings came in the 2021 T20 World Cup semi-final, when his unbeaten 41 off 17 balls against Pakistan carried Australia into the final, which they went on to win. That performance put him on the radar of IPL franchises again, and the Gujarat Titans signed him at the 2022 mega auction, eleven years after his first IPL stint. After retiring from international cricket, Wade joined the Titans’ coaching staff as an assistant coach for IPL 2025.

Wade’s IPL journey began in 2011 with the Delhi Daredevils, where he overlapped with David Warner in a three-match stint that produced only 22 runs. He then disappeared from the league for eleven seasons before the Gujarat Titans picked him at the 2022 mega auction. He was the Titans’ first-choice wicketkeeper at the start of that season and finished as a member of the championship-winning squad under Hardik Pandya. He did not play in IPL 2023, returned to the Titans at the 2024 auction, and made his final playing appearance in May 2024 against Chennai Super Kings. He then crossed over to the dugout, serving as the Titans’ assistant coach in 2025.

Matthew Wade IPL Highest Score
Matthew Wade’s highest IPL score is 35, made for the Gujarat Titans during the 2022 season. It came during his run as the Titans’ opening wicketkeeper-batter early in their debut campaign. Matthew Wade IPL Batting Records
Wade’s IPL record book is a modest one, which is worth stating plainly. He never scored a fifty or a hundred in the league, and his strike rate of 103.39 across 15 matches reflects a career spent mostly in brief, low-impact stints. His standout team achievement outweighs his individual numbers: he was part of the Gujarat Titans squad that won the IPL title in their very first season in 2022. Behind the stumps he was tidy, with 8 catches and 1 stumping in his 15 appearances.

Matthew Wade’s IPL Performance Analysis
The numbers describe a player who was always valued for his experience and nerve rather than his IPL output. In 2022, the Titans gave him the gloves and the opening slot, and he responded with his only sustained run in the league, striking at 113.77 and contributing 23 boundaries. But once Wriddhiman Saha took over behind the stumps, Wade’s path to the XI closed, and the overseas-player limit did the rest. His 2024 return confirmed that he was by then a squad option rather than a first-team pick.
What makes Wade’s story interesting is the gap between his two careers. For Australia, he was a proven finisher and a World Cup winner; in the IPL, the conditions and the competition for overseas wicketkeeping slots never worked in his favour. Playing alongside Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan and David Miller in a championship squad remains the defining chapter of his IPL career. His transition to coaching with the same franchise is a natural next step for a cricketer whose reading of the game always outshone his league statistics.
