Upendra Singh Yadav IPL stats tell an unusual story: a wicketkeeper-batter who has been on an IPL roster for two seasons yet is still waiting for his first appearance in the league. The Kanpur-born keeper was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the 2023 auction and retained for 2024, but a settled playing XI and the presence of Heinrich Klaasen behind the stumps kept him on the bench throughout. Since being released ahead of the 2025 mega auction, he has gone unsold at two auctions and his IPL future now rests on what happens ahead of the 2027 season. His domestic record, though, is genuinely strong: more than 2,700 first-class runs at an average close to 40, including an unbeaten double century against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.
This page brings together everything confirmed about Upendra Singh Yadav’s IPL journey so far: his auction price history, why he never got a game, his domestic numbers, and where things stand for IPL 2027.

Who Is Upendra Singh Yadav?
Upendra Singh Yadav is a 30-year-old Indian wicketkeeper-batter from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A right-handed middle-order bat who keeps wicket, he came up through Uttar Pradesh’s age-group system and made his first-class debut for the state in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy at the age of 20. Early in his career he was dismissed for a duck on debut, but he rebuilt from there and became one of the most reliable domestic keepers in the country.
Yadav later moved to Railways, where he continued to pile up runs in red-ball cricket. His standout innings came in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy, when he scored 203 not out against Mumbai — the kind of knock that marks a player out as more than just a gloveman. In November 2021 he was named in the India A squad for the tour of South Africa, a clear sign that the selectors were watching him. He bowls right-arm offbreak occasionally, though his bowling is strictly a secondary skill. His strengths are timing and placement rather than brute power, which shows in his solid domestic T20 strike rate of 135.76 built more on gaps than on sixes.
Upendra Singh Yadav IPL Teams
| Season | Team | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Bought at auction for ₹25 lakh |
| 2024 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Retained for ₹25 lakh |

| 2026 | – | Unsold at the mini auction |
| 2027 | – | Not officially confirmed |
Hyderabad picked him up at the 2023 auction after a small bidding contest — his base price was ₹20 lakh and both Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad showed interest before SRH closed the deal at ₹25 lakh. The franchise kept faith with him for another season in 2024, but he remained an unused squad member in both campaigns. Before the 2025 mega auction, SRH released him along with several other Indian players, and he has not been part of any IPL squad since.

Yadav’s 2024 season was a repeat of 2023 in the worst way: retained by the franchise, but never selected for a single match. Sunrisers’ keeping duties belonged entirely to Heinrich Klaasen, one of the most destructive finishers in the league and an automatic pick, which left no realistic path into the XI for a second specialist keeper. He travelled, trained and stayed ready, but his IPL numbers stayed blank.

After being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad before the 2025 mega auction, Yadav entered the auction pool with a base price of ₹30 lakh and went unsold. He therefore played no part in IPL 2025. His numbers for the season are zero matches, zero runs and zero dismissals, simply because he had no franchise.

Yadav was listed among the unsold players at the IPL 2026 mini auction, again at a base price of ₹30 lakh, with no bids from any franchise. As a result he sat out the entire 2026 season. In the same window he stayed active in state-level T20 cricket, including a stint with Kashi Rudras in the UP T20 league, where he was bought for ₹13.50 lakh — a reminder that his value in the shorter domestic game remains recognised.

Upendra Singh Yadav’s IPL Performance Analysis
There is no on-field IPL performance to analyse, and that is the central fact of Yadav’s story in this league. From a numbers perspective he is a player whose domestic profile says “IPL-ready” — a keeper who bats in the middle order, scores at close to 40 in both first-class and List A cricket, and strikes at 135 in domestic T20s — yet who never got the one ingredient every uncapped player needs: an opportunity. His two seasons at Sunrisers coincided with Heinrich Klaasen owning the keeper’s role, and with franchises now preferring keepers who can also open or anchor, backup keepers like Yadav face a narrow market.
The trend that matters is the demand side. He went from a ₹25 lakh squad player to unsold at ₹30 lakh base in two straight auctions, which suggests teams see him as surplus rather than a prospect. Still, he is only 30, keeps wicket reliably, and continues to score in domestic cricket and state T20 leagues. For him, the realistic route back into the IPL is not another auction entry at the same base price — it is a big domestic T20 season, or a mid-season injury replacement slot, where a proven keeper-batter can slot straight in. Until then, his IPL career remains a contract without a cap.
