Season by Season: How His Numbers Grew
Shreyas Iyer announced himself in 2015 with 439 runs in his debut season and won the Emerging Player award. His next season, 2016, was the only real dip of his career: just 30 runs in 6 matches. He answered back in 2017 with 338 runs and took over the Delhi captaincy during the 2018 season, scoring 411 runs at an average of 37.36.
As full time captain of Delhi Capitals, he produced his first three 400 plus seasons in a row: 463 runs in 2019, 519 runs in 2020 and led the team to the final in 2020, and 175 runs in only 8 matches in an injury hit 2021. Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for 12.25 crore in the 2022 mega auction and made him captain. He made 401 runs that year, missed the whole of 2023 with a back injury, and returned in 2024 to captain KKR to the IPL title with 351 runs at a strike rate of nearly 147.
The biggest chapter came in 2025. Punjab Kings signed him for a record 26.75 crore in the mega auction, and he repaid them with the best season of his life: 604 runs at an average above 50 and a strike rate of 175.07, taking Punjab to the final in his first season as their captain. In 2026 he backed it up with 498 runs at an even higher average of 55.33, including his first IPL hundred, a 101 for Punjab Kings.
His season by season strike rates tell their own story. From 2015 to 2022, he mostly struck between 120 and 140, the classic middle order anchor. From 2024 onwards, he reinvented himself as a power hitter, striking at 146.86 in 2024, 175.07 in 2025 and 168.81 in 2026.
What This Record Tells Us
Consistency is the first thing the numbers show. In every full season he played, Shreyas Iyer scored at least 338 runs except the strange 2016 dip. His floor is high: even in lean years he keeps an average in the 30s. That is why teams have trusted him with captaincy and big auction prices.
The second lesson is reinvention. His strike rate jumped from the low 120s in the Delhi years to the mid 170s with Punjab Kings. He changed his game in his early 30s instead of fading, which is rare for a middle order batter. The 2025 and 2026 seasons prove a player can add power hitting late in a career.
The third lesson is about conversion. Thirty two fifties but only one hundred in 11 seasons shows a habit of getting out in the 50s and 60s. For years the missing hundred was the one gap in his record. He finally fixed it in 2026 with his 101, which also became his career highest score.
Finally, the numbers show a big match player. He captained three different franchises to IPL finals, Delhi in 2020, KKR to the title in 2024 and Punjab in 2025. His best seasons came when he carried leadership duties, which suggests the added responsibility sharpens his batting rather than weighing him down.
